"A Day in the Life of…” An Insider’s View of Advertising by Sally Bishr

On March 3, 2010, an amazing panel of experts representing different areas of the advertising world gathered to offer some of their wisdom to AWNY’s Young Executives. Held at USA TODAY, the event attracted a large group, all of whom arrived with the same goal--to benefit from the panelists’ history of success.

Moderated by Rekha Kurikoti, Senior Recruiter/Human Resources, Disney ABC Television group, the discussion allowed panelists to share stories of their achievements, and gave the Young Executives in the audience some positive motivation in the face of today’s sluggish economy.

The panelists:

Tim Queenan, SVP/Executive Director, Digital Practice, Draftfcb NY
Cheryl Darmanin, Senior Director Account Management, Yahoo
Amber Thomas, Director Business Development, Heartbeat Digital
Anna Kassoway, Senior VP of Marketing & Creative, Vibrant Media

After a brief networking breakfast, the discussion began. It was divided into two sections--questions presented by the moderator and an audience Q&A.

The first question directed to the panelists concerned what challenges they faced and how they overcame them. All agreed that, right now, maintaining balance and growing their business has been very hard. They advised that being open, and taking calculated risks in specific situations, particularly when conventional methods fail, is a “must-acquire” skill, along with being able to coming up with a “plan B”. In short, being creative is the beating heart of a successful advertising career.

Asked about key elements of success, they had these tips:

be diplomatic and flexible
maintain an open mind to other points of view
master communications skills, especially negotiation techniques,

All are important aspects to help oneself flourish in today’s competitive market.

Among the questions posed by the audience:

Q. “What is the most significant characteristic a hiring manager is looking for in a candidate?

A. The panel emphasized that there is no one formula that works for all hiring managers or all candidates, however, to secure a fruitful interview, candidates must maintain proper body language, eye contact, and confidence about what they bring to the organization’s bottom line.

Q. “ Is it possible to get a job while I have not much experience when there are others with over 10 years of experience applying for the same position?”

A. As long as you exhibit confidence in your skills, speak articulately about how you envision your role, and specifically set forth what you offer to contribute to the success of the organization, you have an outstanding chance at getting the job you want.

Overall, the panelists’ insights lent a very refreshing, warm ray of hope to a rainy New York day.
